Purple Ribbons and Pink Tops

Adam Barker, Liberata Facilities Manager, is about to undertake this year’s London Marathon in memory of his 20-month-old cousin, Aria.

Alongside Aria’s father, Terry Farish, the pair have been running various events, all the way supported by Team AriBoo. Now it’s the big one, London 2026.

So far, between them, they have fundraised over £19,400 for The Lilly Foundation.

Spectacular fundraising

In March 2025, at just 20 months old, Aria was diagnosed with the incurable POLG mitochondrial disease, devastating everyone who knew and loved her. Terry and Adam contacted The Lily Foundation, and with their support, they launched Team AriBoo.

The two decided to raise funds by running the Alton Towers Half Marathon, and their local community shared Aria’s story on social media. Their initial target was £500. Within 24 hours, they’d reached a massive £1,700.

They were offered places in the 2026 London Marathon, and without hesitation, both signed up. A new target of £5,000 was set and, again, surpassed, raising £ 19,400 to date. You can donate here.

For Aria

Sadly, on Saturday, 9 August, as the sun shone through the hospital window, Aria passed away. Adam said, “Our little butterfly gained her wings, surrounded by the love of her family. She gave it all she had, but unfortunately, this cruel disease won the fight”.

Emotions were high as they stood on the starting line of the Alton Towers Half Marathon. The sun was shining, as they wore their pink team tops and, most importantly, a purple ribbon once used to tie a bow around her little pigtails was tied around their running shoes’ laces. This was a reminder that Aria was with them every step of the race.

The Lily Foundation

The Lily Foundation was founded in 2007 by Liz Merritt in memory of her daughter, Lily. Today, it is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting mitochondrial disease, a rare and life-limiting condition. Inspired by Lily’s tragic yet remarkable story, the charity was established to support families, raise awareness and fund vital research.

What is mitochondrial disease?

Mitochondrial disease is a rare, complex, and difficult-to-diagnose genetic disorder that affects people in very different ways. It can affect any organ at any age and often occurs in babies and young children. Currently, there is no cure.

As the big day approaches, Adam and Terry are grateful for all the support they have received so far. If you would like to donate, visit Terry’s Just Giving page.

If you are running or watching the London marathon, look out for their bright pink tops.

The final message from Adam:

Most important to me, do not take things for granted. Tonight, hold your loved ones close, reach out to a friend, and make a difference to someone’s day with a small act of kindness.

From everyone at Liberata, best of luck, guys!
